| Annotation: | This study describes elements of religious and ancient Taoism that deal with practical diet and metaphysics in order to demonstrate how they are complementary aspects of one structure. As grains are known to be the scissors that cut life, Levi draws on well-known Taoist biographies and texts for insight into practices of abstaining from grains. While making occasional comparisons with Buddhism, she pays close attention to the connections between these practices and the apprehension of the unity of the Tao and the achievement of immortality. |
