| Annotation: | Stating that the field of “environmental ethics” does not belong to the more recent philosophical category of applied ethics nor does it fit neatly into the two other classical categories of natural and moral philosophy, Callicott describes environmental philosophy as holding a unique place in the discipline of philosophy. Through the presentation of five different worldviews (e.g., Chinese, Japanese, Buddhist, Indian, and Ecological), Callicott argues that the emphasis of environmental ethics functions as a criticism and reformulation of Western moral and metaphysical presuppositions. Thus, environmental ethics is not a derivative of these presuppositions and is not meant to address the environmental crisis on a superficial level. |
