| Annotation: | This book examines the figure and role of the Hindu guru and the guru-sisya (teacher-student) relationship in the classical tradition of Advaita Vedanta. Contextualizing Sankaras writings with a historical review of Indian education and the Upanishads, Cenkner first addresses the ideal of the guru and the guru-sisya relationship as expressed in philosophical texts and law books from the eighth century. He then compares five twentieth-century Sankaracaryas ([gurus] within this tradition) with Sankaras ideal of a guru. |
