Book Title:Acting as a Way of Salvation: A Study of Raganuga Bhakti Sadhana
Author(s):Haberman, David
Religion(s):Hinduism
Publisher Name:Oxford University Press
Place of Publication:New York, N.Y.
Date of Publication:1988
Annotation:Haberman applies sociological theories about role-playing to the study of “a religio-dramatic technique” practiced by the Gaudiya Vaisnavas of Bengal, in which devotees enter into a religious reality by taking on the identities of mythological figures. Considering the wider implications of this for the study of religion, he offers “a comparative model of religious action” and argues that attention to dramatic technique yields fresh insights about religious experience and transformation.
